The police have confirmed that unidentified armed men yesterday attacked and snatched two rifles from two officers on stop-and-search operation in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP Friday, the police public relations officer, chief superintendent Geoffrey Ogbonna said the incident occurred in front of the State Criminal Investigations Department along Uzuakoli Road.
While explaining that the officers were receiving treatment at an undisclosed health facility, he added that contrary to some reports, the headquarters was not attacked and is safe and secure.
The state command image maker, therefore, appealed for calm and useful information from the people to get to the root of the ugly incident and bring those involved to book.
It would be recalled that early last year, the office was attacked and set on fire by unknown gunmen which led to loss of over 10 lives on both sides and property worth millions of naira.
